Asking for More in November to Serve Others

UTD Management Students Select Organizations to Serve in Their Negotiation Journey

Update, the service organizations have been identified!

As a reminder this month students in my five negotiation classes will be reaching out to the UTD community and surrounding areas. University of Texas at Tyler Professor and media genius – Lorri Allen, CSP has successfully deployed the Ask Outrageously project with her Honors Students for years.

This week, our Naveen Jindal School of Management, UT Dallas students reached out to leaders, program directors, and volunteer managers to request brief meetings. They are meeting to determine each organization’s needs during these tough times. Then, students will make requests and use their negotiating skills to positively impact others.

Originally, there were lists of names of non-profit organizations suggested by UTD. Thank you, Angela Granger and Edwin Van Der Vlist for your help and to our undergrad dean Dawn Owens for approving the project. Denise Cason, MBA do you see what your students are doing? Michelle Adams, Ph.D. are you proud of your college?

The names were posted on the wall and vetted by our UTD Short-term Work Group sponsored by @University of Texas at Dallas Center for Teaching and Learning’s Salena Brody, Ph.D. and Ashlyn Henson McGuire, Ph.D team. Now, the service organizations have been researched, discussed, added to, and students have selected the following organizations:

Comet Cupboard, Cooking for the Crowd, Dress for Success Dallas, Feed My Starving Children, Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support, Little Hands Book Bank, Metrocrest Services, Minnie’s Food Pantry, North Texas Food Bank, Operation Kindness, Plano Animal Shelter, Richardson Animal Shelter, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, The Birthday Party Project, The Network, Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation, Trauma Support Services of North Dallas, University Blood Initiative, United Through H.O.P.E., Inc., UTD Center for BrainHealth, UTD Transfer Mentor Program.

In addition to discussions about reading body language, David M. Schneer, Ph.D./CEO/Researcher/Author/Speaker gave our students tips on exhibiting body language that reflects a strong leader.

A few days ago, many posted great advice on asking. Here’s the LinkedIn post offering excellent ideas on making powerful requests: https://lnkd.in/gZWXxUbF

One suggestion was that our students should be authentic in their requests.

Results from our last poll firmly support that actions speak louder than words. (See the results in the picture below.)

Watch here for the updates, challenges, and results as these bright students ask to help others. Can’t wait to see the opportunities created and their results as they make requests and deal with this negotiation service journey!
