As You Negotiate the Holiday Season, What Gift Are You Bringing?
This is the time of giving and receiving presents. I have never been a confident gift giver. I’m not certain if people will love what I choose for them.
One of the areas where most of my negotiation audience members and students need help is gaining more confidence.
A key principle is knowing the value you that you bring to the table. Most can easily identify areas of weakness. However, it becomes more difficult when pondering these questions:
❓What do you bring that others value?
❓What gifts were you given? (ex. Are you organized? Driven? Approachable? Energetic?)
❓How do you make others feel when in your presence? (ex. Do you help them relax? Give them a sense of trust? Call them to action?)
If you don’t know what others value, here’s a simple activity. ASK people you trust what you bring to the table. Share with them what unique value they provide you and others.
Listen. They usually tell you something you weren’t expecting. Claim those gifts!
Merry Christmas! Happiest of Holidays! You are a gift!
