Accommodate and Negotiate

The word “accommodate” refers to many ideas in negotiations. For instance, the party accommodated (or granted) several of the other side’s requests. Or, the deal required several accommodations (changes) before it was agreeable to all involved.

Yesterday, the state of my accommodations (my office) required me to accommodate (adjust to new conditions) quickly. The area next to my office flooded and I walked into the scene depicted in the video.

That was a change I didn’t anticipate. My classes had presentations and there were documents I needed to print. Also, I worried I wouldn’t be able to have the technology figured out for my virtual classes.

Know what? My outstanding colleagues were so accommodating (helpful) to ensure my work was completed and our students were served. There was a personal note communicating what happened. I received help with the technology. And I printed those documents on another floor.

The word DEAL stands for Decide-Engage-Accommodate-Leverage.

In negotiations, accommodate is often the aspect that is ignored.

Want durable deals that others commit to upholding? Great! Listen to the other sides. Understand their perspectives and challenges. And, find a way to consider their interests in obtaining agreements.
