We just returned from spending a week with our daughter and her husband in O’ahu. They live next to the Dole Plantation, near North Shore.
Hawaii has gorgeous beaches, incredible views, and delicious food including fresh fruit and seafood. We saw breathtaking sunsets, exotic fish, and sea turtles. The weather was perfect. Their neighborhood has wild chickens everywhere AND even a resident peacock named Kevin.
Know what Hawaii didn’t have? Billboards and honking. Both are against the law. Billboards would ruin the stunning views.
And, unless it’s a true emergency, drivers don’t honk. It is considered rude and impatient. Instead, you practice the Aloha spirit and wait. You pay attention, relax, and let others pull in front of you in traffic. Instead of rushing, you take into consideration others’ needs.
As negotiators, we could practice being kinder, more observant, and patient. People do not move on our time schedules. They move in ways that reflect their own needs and
lives. Relax. Consider whether the matter requires immediate attention or a little patience with some Aloha spirit. Breathe.
Go negotiate, my friend.
